Important Terms for Performance Improvement
An updated list of ever-changing terms used in the Performance Improvement industry.
Accomplishment
An accomplishment (output or work product) is the product or outcome of behavior.
Behavior
A behavior is something a person does that involves an action, usually in response to an internal or external stimulus, that produces an accomplishment.
Behavior Engineering Model
The Behavior Engineering Model is a framework of guidelines designed to optimize the behavioral and environmental factors that management can control for the pursuit of worthy performance. The model includes these six categories:
- Information
- Resources
- Consequences and Incentives
- Knowledge and Skills
- Capacity
- Motivation
Career Pathing
Career pathing involves defining the skills and experience someone needs to attain to move into any job role within an organization.
Criteria
Criteria is the minimum standard that is used to measure an accomplishment.
Exemplary Performer
An Exemplary Performer is a worker who routinely produces accomplishments at or above standard.
Human Performance
Human performance is a function of both the behavior and products of that behavior—known as accomplishments—of a person or group of people. It includes the action(s) of a person or people and the result of the action or actions.
Intervention
An intervention is a solution that eliminates or reduces the human performance deficiencies.
Performance Analysis
A Performance Analysis is the process of gathering and analyzing information to define the desired performance, determine deficiencies in performance, determine the causes of those deficiencies, and selecting appropriate solutions, or interventions.
Performance Gap
A performance gap (performance deficiency) is the space between the desired and actual performance. This space or gap is the performance deficiency that currently exists.
Task
A task is unit of behavior that contributes to the production of an accomplishment. It has a definite beginning, contains two or more steps, and results in a measurable output.
